Adrian Del Castillo singled in the winning run in the 10th inning after Lourdes Gurriel Jr. homered to tie the game in the ninth, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon in Phoenix.
Alek Thomas sacrificed Pavin Smith to third in the 10th before pinch-hitter Del Castillo looped a walkoff single into short left field off Matt Festa (3-3) in the rubber game of the series.
The Diamondbacks’ comeback spoiled Cleveland left-hander Parker Messick’s major league debut.
Messick, recalled before the game from Triple-A Columbus, gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings in his major league debut and was in line for the victory until Gurriel’s 424-foot homer off Cade Smith leading off the ninth.
Gurriel, who has been the primary cleanup since the trade deadline, has nine RBIs in his last six games.
Messick gave up seven hits, six singles, and struck out six. He threw first-pitch strikes to 22 of the 26 batters he faced and used only 83 pitches. The southpaw’s only walk was to the first batter he faced, Arizona leadoff hitter Ketel Marte.
Thomas had two singles and Andrew Saalfrank (1-1) retired the two batters he faced in the 10th for his first major league victory. The D-backs had lost four of five.
Daniel Schneemann had two hits, while C.J. Kayfus tripled and scored. The Guardians were an American League-best 24-13 since July 7, but have now lost five of six.
Cade Smith blew his fourth save in 11 opportunities.
Arizona starter Brandon Pfaadt gave up five hits and two runs in seven innings, with five strikeouts and one walk. He gave up two hits, both singles, in his final five innings and retired 10 of his last 11.
Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the first after Steven Kwan and Schneeman opened with singles. Kyle Manzardo was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Kwan scored on Bo Naylor’s groundout.
The Diamondbacks tied it at 1-1 in their half of the first when Marte walked and scored on Gurriel’s two-out single.
